Hi! I'm posting design challenges on my Twitter #DailyUI
Project duration:
February 2023- March 2023
My role:
UX designer
Responsibilities:
User research, wireframing, prototyping, usability study
The problem:
In our school district, some systems are still analog and that causes inconvenience. Also when the buses run late, parents get worried as the communication is not timely so calls come flooding in.
The goal:
Parents/guardians have their children ride the bus with peace of mind and also the bus company benefits from easy communication.
It all started when my son's school bus delayed big time. I was looking for a social good project so this struck me. " This is it. We gotta have a school bus tracker!". I strongly believed so but wasn't sure if other parents would think about it the same way as I did so I interviewed my friends and family whose children ride school bus. They strongly agreed that it will be really nice if there was a way to track the buses. So that I made sure what I’d be designing is needed and useful for the community.
Personas
Paper wireframes and
low-fidelity prototype
Usability study :
The main purpose of this app is to track the school bus, which is very easy and simple. So usability testing focused mainly on changing the riding schedule.
Based on the insights from the usability studies, I changed the schedule change tab to be smaller. It shows only one option so that user can just click one spot without hovering on.
Additional changes based on the insights included removing “confirmed” screen. After changing the schedule, user clicks the confirm button and immediately exits the window. So it saves one movement of clicking the X button to exit.
Impact:
Users shared that the app made changing ride schedule and tracking the bus easier. Since there wasn’t this kind of system in the community, many quotes were like “this is such a great idea!”.
What I learned:
The idea was originally inspired by my own experience so I knew some biases were in the design and conducting usability test made me realize that. I created both personas with similar ages but I learned that there could be older guardians using this app such as grandparents from usability studies. So I'd consider including different age groups if I continue on this project or any next project I'd work on.
